Do What Is Good

#15: Memorize a book of the Bible.
Well, it took me a couple of years, but I finally finished memorizing the book of Titus yesterday. Actually, it wouldn't have taken me nearly as long if I'd been more consistent. I went through a few spans where I'd sit down with a printout of Chapter 1, recite the first few verses from memory, then get frustrated and stop trying. Then a few months ago, I discovered that the perfect time to work on memorization was during my evening commute. I'd read a verse in my car and try to repeat it from memory before pulling out of the parking lot, then repeat it over and over until I was sure I had it. Then I'd back up and do the whole chapter, and eventually the whole book. Having Scripture on my mind and lips has really kept me from lashing out at other drivers (and if you've ever driven in Louisville, you know how challenging that can be), especially when I'm quoting passages like this one:
"Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live--not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God."
Self-controlled? Kind? Talk about convicting! And for being such a short book, Titus is chock-full of stuff like that. I'm glad to have it in my arsenal!

Peanut Butter Sandwiches and Salsa

#15: Memorize a book of the Bible.
This one was going to take awhile regardless of which book I picked, so I figured I should hurry up and get on it. I knew I wanted to do one of Paul's letters, particularly one of the pastorals. (With Tom going into the ministry, I figured it'd be helpful to have some applicable verses in my immediate arsenal.) After careful consideration, I've decided on Titus. There's a lot of truth and wisdom packed into those three chapters. I'm pretty excited about it!

#85: Jeff Street once a month.
Tom and I got to work in the storage closet at Jeff Street this weekend, a first for us. I think it's a great idea; people can check in two pieces of luggage at no charge. For a lot of these people, everything they own is in these bags, and it's nice for them to have a place to store them safely. The closet closed at 10:45, but we still had an hour and 15 minutes before the day shelter closed, so we spent the rest of the morning hanging out in the office with Carla, another one of the volunteers. Around 11:30, Danny poked his head in and said they were serving "peanut butter sandwiches and salsa" for the residents, and that we were welcome to have some. Apparently that's what was on the menu for that day, though I'm not sure who came up with that combo. We all cracked up (Danny included) because those two things don't typically go together...but sure enough, when we walked through the dining room on our way out, there was a tray of PB&Js, a big bowl of tortilla chips, and a smaller bowl of salsa! Ah, good times at Jeff Street.
