#15: Memorize a book of the Bible.
This one was going to take awhile regardless of which book I picked, so I figured I should hurry up and get on it. I knew I wanted to do one of Paul's letters, particularly one of the pastorals. (With Tom going into the ministry, I figured it'd be helpful to have some applicable verses in my immediate arsenal.) After careful consideration, I've decided on Titus. There's a lot of truth and wisdom packed into those three chapters. I'm pretty excited about it!
#85: Jeff Street once a month.
Tom and I got to work in the storage closet at Jeff Street this weekend, a first for us. I think it's a great idea; people can check in two pieces of luggage at no charge. For a lot of these people, everything they own is in these bags, and it's nice for them to have a place to store them safely. The closet closed at 10:45, but we still had an hour and 15 minutes before the day shelter closed, so we spent the rest of the morning hanging out in the office with Carla, another one of the volunteers. Around 11:30, Danny poked his head in and said they were serving "peanut butter sandwiches and salsa" for the residents, and that we were welcome to have some. Apparently that's what was on the menu for that day, though I'm not sure who came up with that combo. We all cracked up (Danny included) because those two things don't typically go together...but sure enough, when we walked through the dining room on our way out, there was a tray of PB&Js, a big bowl of tortilla chips, and a smaller bowl of salsa! Ah, good times at Jeff Street.
